The Contemporary Yurt Company
Radial rafters give strength

What is a Contemporary Yurt?

A modern adaptation of the traditional shelter used for centuries by Central Asian nomads. A circular structure that consists of a wooden frame with a lattice wall, radial rafters, a central compression ring and a framed door, with a durable fabric cover. Although generally classified as a tent, the Contemporary Yurt is far stronger, and weather tight. Each of our yurts is topped with a large skylight dome, and it doesn’t take a lot of imagination to realise how special going to bed looking up at the stars is. Similarly, waking in the morning to a blue sky is equally magical! The skylight dome floods the yurt with natural light.

Whilst primarily designed as a low cost, environmentally friendly living space the Contemporary Yurt is also ideal as an office, studio, romantic getaway or personal retreat. We can supply yurts from 4 to 6 meter diameter. Traditionally yurts are fitted with log burners for cooking and warmth but they can be just as fitted out as a traditional home with electricity, heating, and hot and cold water. Or you can turn the clock back and live sustainably. With a little imagination a contemporary yurt can be what ever you want it to be. Guests at our Yurt Camp particularly enjoy the log burners that we install in the yurts.

Beautiful and aesthetically pleasing, the Contemporary Yurt has minimal impact on the land, and though durable and sturdy it can be removed or repositioned without a trace. Consequently, planning permission is usually not required.
